- The First Deaf Women Ascent -

On September 22, 1994, Heidi climbed Kilimanjaro (19,340 feet) on the continent of Africa. A guide and porters, who wore sneakers without laces and carried heavy packs on their heads without straining, accompanied her. The guide could not write English well, and lip reading him was difficult because of his heavy accent – so Heidi communicated with him using gestures. At midnight, Heidi got ready to make her final ascent under a full moon, and climbed through a beautiful sunrise. She became the first Deaf woman to reach the top of Kilimanjaro.
